Why did I get a message saying print limit exceeded?

You got that message because all the hi-rises have a limit on the number of pages that can be printed by each user. When that limit is reached, an error message will pop up the next time someone tries to print.

What is the limit? How many pages can I print?

This varies from site to site. The most common number of pages allowed is 10 to 20.

What do I do if I need to print more than that?

To reset the page count you need to restart the computer. Logging out of the resident account and then logging back in should also work. It is a good practice to always restart the computer before you begin using it. This makes sure you have the full number of pages allowed and that any information from the previous user is erased. (If the last person just walked away and didn’t log out of the account the print limit could have been reached and you wouldn’t know that until you tried to print and got an error message.)

Why didn’t my document print?

This can happen for a number of reasons. The most common are not having the correct printer selected and there not being paper in the printer.

Always check for paper before you start to print. This varies by site, but the common expectation is that residents bring their own paper if they wish to print.

Also, make sure you have the correct printer selected and not something like a fax machine, Print to PDF, or Microsoft XPS Document Writer.

Reminders:

  • Please be sure paper is standard sized. Smaller paper can get jammed in the printer. Also do not use notebook paper or other paper not meant for printers. This will get jammed inside the printer.
  • If there is a paper jam, you can try to follow the on-screen instructions to remove it if the jam is simple. If you don’t feel confident doing this, or the jam is complicated you should contact the Computer Administrator. Trying to unjam the printer yourself can lead to damage of the equipment. (This is especially true when paper is jammed inside or wrapped around the rollers.)
